2026-04-24fix(path): normalize path slashes on Windows #37729tao1
Problem: On Windows, path separators may become inconsistent for various reasons, which makes normalization quite painful. Solution: Normalize paths to `/` at the entry boundaries and always use it internally, converting back only in rare cases where `\` is really needed (e.g. cmd.exe/bat scripts?). This is the first commit in a series of incremental steps. Note: * some funcs won't respect shellslash. e.g. `expand/fnamemodify` * some funcs still respect shellslash, but will be updated in a follow PR. e.g. `ex_pwd/f_chdir/f_getcwd` * uv's built-in funcs always return `\`. e.g. `uv.cwd/uv.exepath` Co-authored-by: Justin M. 2026-04-09feat(logs)!: move logs to `stdpath("state")/logs`Olivia Kinnear1
2026-02-18feat(logging): rename ".nvimlog" => "nvim.log" #37935Justin M. Keyes1
- Rename ".nvimlog" to "nvim.log" - doesn't need to be "hidden"/dotfile - ".log" extension helps with filetype detection - Also rename "nvim/log" => "nvim/nvim.log"
2026-02-03feat(defaults): exclude temp dirs from 'shada' oldfiles #37631Pavel Pisetski1
Problem: Temporary files from /tmp/ and /private/ paths clutter :oldfiles list. Additionally, the documented Windows default (rA:,rB:) was never applied due to a missing platform condition. Solution: Drop platform-specific shada differences and default to excluding /tmp/ and /private/ paths.
2025-05-04feat(messages): cleanup Lua error messagesJustin M. Keyes1
"Error" in error messages is redundant. Just provide the context, don't say "Error ...".
2025-05-04test: multiline assert_log()Justin M. Keyes1
Problem: assert_log() only matches single lines. This was never an intentional decision, it was merely a result of using read_file_list(). Note: any tests that indiscriminately match `.*` should be rewritten to avoid (unlikely) "false positives". I checked all existing tests. Solution: Change assert_log() to match the concatenated lines instead of matching per-line.

2025-01-04test: use spawn_wait() instead of system() #31852Justin M. Keyes1
Problem: Tests that need to check `nvim` CLI behavior (no RPC session) create their own ad-hoc `system()` wrappers. Solution: - Use `n.spawn_wait` instead of `system()`. - Bonus: this also improves the tests by explicitly checking for `stdout` or `stderr`. And if a signal is raised, `ProcStream.status` will reflect it.
2024-11-14fix(tests): needing two calls to setup a screen is cringebfredl1
Before calling "attach" a screen object is just a dummy container for (row, col) values whose purpose is to be sent as part of the "attach" function call anyway. Just create the screen in an attached state directly. Keep the complete (row, col, options) config together. It is still completely valid to later detach and re-attach as needed, including to another session.
2024-09-09fix(test): "tempdir not a directory" in CI logsJustin M. Keyes1

2024-09-09refactor(test): rename alter_slashes, invert its behaviorJustin M. Keyes1
- `alter_slashes` belongs in `testutil.lua`, not `testnvim.lua`. - `alter_slashes` is an unusual name. Rename it to `fix_slashes`. - invert its behavior, to emphasize that `/` slashes are the preferred, pervasive convention, not `\` slashes.
2024-09-08fix(startup): server fails if $NVIM_APPNAME is relative dir #30310Justin M. Keyes1
Problem: If $NVIM_APPNAME is a relative dir path, Nvim fails to start its primary/default server, and `v:servername` is empty. Root cause is d34c64e342dfba9248d1055e702d02620a1b31a8, but this wasn't noticed until 96128a5076b7 started reporting the error more loudly. Solution: - `server_address_new`: replace slashes "/" in the appname before using it as a servername. - `vim_mktempdir`: always prefer the system-wide top-level "nvim.user/" directory. That isn't intended to be specific to NVIM_APPNAME; rather, each *subdirectory* ("nvim.user/xxx") is owned by each Nvim instance. Nvim "apps" can be identified by the server socket(s) stored in those per-Nvim subdirs. fix #30256
2024-09-05feat(defaults): popupmenu "Open in browser", "Go to definition" #30261Justin M. Keyes1
- Use the popup to expose more features such as LSP and gx. - Move the copy/paste items lower in the menu, they are lower priority.
2024-09-02feat(startup): validate --listen addressJustin M. Keyes1
Problem: `nvim --listen` does not error on EADDRINUSE. #30123 Solution: Now that `$NVIM_LISTEN_ADDRESS` is deprecated and input *only* (instead of the old, ambiguous situation where it was both an input *and* an output), we can be fail fast instead of trying to "recover". This reverts the "recovery" behavior of 704ba4151e7f67999510ee0ac19fdabb595d530c, but that was basically a workaround for the fragility of `$NVIM_LISTEN_ADDRESS`.
2024-04-23test: improve test conventionsdundargoc1
Specifically, functions that are run in the context of the test runner are put in module `test/testutil.lua` while the functions that are run in the context of the test session are put in `test/functional/testnvim.lua`. Closes https://github.com/neovim/neovim/issues/27004.

2024-03-23refactor(tests): all screen tests should use highlightsbfredl1
This is the first installment of a multi-PR series significantly refactoring how highlights are being specified. The end goal is to have a base set of 20 ish most common highlights, and then specific files only need to add more groups to that as needed. As a complicating factor, we also want to migrate to the new default color scheme eventually. But by sharing a base set, that future PR will hopefully be a lot smaller since a lot of tests will be migrated just simply by updating the base set in place. As a first step, fix the anti-pattern than Screen defaults to ignoring highlights. Highlights are integral part of the screen state, not something "extra" which we only test "sometimes". For now, we still allow opt-out via the intentionally ugly screen._default_attr_ids = nil The end goal is to get rid of all of these eventually (which will be easier as part of the color scheme migration)

2023-09-27feat: NVIM_APPNAME supports relative paths #25233Rory Nesbitt1

2023-02-16feat: $NVIM_APPNAME #22128Ghjuvan Lacambre1
This commit implements the ability to control all of the XDG paths Neovim should use. This is done by setting an environment variable named NVIM_APPNAME. For example, setting $NVIM_APPNAME makes Neovim look for its configuration directory in $XDG_CONFIG_HOME/$NVIM_APPNAME instead of $XDG_CONFIG_HOME/nvim. If NVIM_APPNAME is not set or is an empty string, "nvim" will be used as default. The usecase for this feature is to enable an easy way to switch from configuration to configuration. One might argue that the various $XDG environment variables can already be used for this usecase. However, setting $XDG environment variables also affects tools spawned by Neovim. For example, while setting $XDG_CONFIG_HOME will enable Neovim to use a different configuration directory, it will also prevent Git from finding its "default" configuration. Closes https://github.com/neovim/neovim/issues/21691

2022-06-30feat: stdpath('run'), /tmp/nvim.user/ #18993Justin M. Keyes1
Problem: - Since c57f6b28d71d #8519, sockets are created in ~/.local/… but XDG spec says: "XDG_RUNTIME_DIR: Must be on the local filesystem", which implies that XDG_STATE_DIR is potentially non-local. - Not easy to inspect Nvim-created temp files (for debugging etc). Solution: - Store sockets in stdpath('run') ($XDG_RUNTIME_DIR). - Establish "/tmp/nvim.user/" as the tempdir root shared by all Nvims. - Make ok() actually useful. - Introduce assert_nolog(). closes #3517 closes #17093

2021-08-27feat: defaults: auto-create backup dirGregory Anders1
Copy the behavior of 'undodir' and create the last specified directory in the 'backupdir' option if it doesn't exist. Use trailing slashes for 'backupdir' as well as 'viewdir' and 'undodir' by default. Note that 'undodir' always behaves as though it has the trailing slashes, regardless of whether or not they are present. They are added to the default option value to minimize surprise. The '.' value in 'backupdir' is kept because the default behavior for backups is solely to have a backup if the save of the main file to disk fails. As soon as that save is completed the backup file is removed, so generally there is no need to put them in a central location. Co-authored by: murphy66 <murphy66@gmail.com>

2021-01-13logging: move to XDG_CACHE_HOME (#13739)Michael Lingelbach1
while there is some controversy, stdpath('cache') looks like a better fit for logs than stdpath('data'): you can remove logs without preventing nvim to work which fits the XDG_CACHE_HOME definition of `user specific non-essential data files`.
