2026-04-05fix(windows): force console codepage to UTF-8 for shell/system() #38742Elijah Koulaxis1
Problem: On Windows, `:!echo тест` shows `????` because the console code page defaults to a legacy ANSI encoding (e.g. CP1252) instead of `UTF-8` Solution: Call `SetConsoleOutputCP(CP_UTF8)` and `SetConsoleCP(CP_UTF8)` in `do_os_system()` before spawning child processes, and restore the original values after. It covers both `:!` and `system()` since they both go through `do_os_system()`
2026-02-20test: start test runners in Xtest_xdg dir (#37964)zeertzjq1
This is a better way to prevent parallel tests from interfering with each other, as there are many ways files can be created and deleted in tests, so enforcing different file names is hard. Using $TMPDIR can also work in most cases, but 'backipskip' etc. have special defaults for $TMPDIR. Symlink runtime/, src/, test/ and README.md to Xtest_xdg dir to make tests more convenient (and symlinking test/ is required for busted). Also, use README.md instead of test/README.md in the Ex mode inccommand test, as test/README.md no longer contains 'N' char.
2026-01-13fix(shell): ceci n'est pas une pipebfredl1
On linux /dev/stdin is defined as a symlink to /proc/self/fd/0 This in turn is defined as a "magic" symlink which is allowed to point to internal kernel objects which really does not have a file name. As a glaring inconsistency, fopen("/proc/self/fd/0", "r") works if fd was originally opened using pipe() but not using socketpair(). As it happens UV_CREATE_PIPE does not create pipes but creates socket pairs. These two unfortunate conditions means that using /dev/stdin and similar does not work in shell commands in nvim on linux. as a work around, override libuv's descicion and create an actual pipe pair. This change is not needed on BSD:s but done unconditionally for simplicity, except for on windows where it is not done for stdout because of windows fixes #35984

2025-02-11refactor(tests): drop os_kill #32401Justin M. Keyes1
Also change job tests to use `nvim` instead of random programs like `ping`.
2024-11-14fix(tests): needing two calls to setup a screen is cringebfredl1
Before calling "attach" a screen object is just a dummy container for (row, col) values whose purpose is to be sent as part of the "attach" function call anyway. Just create the screen in an attached state directly. Keep the complete (row, col, options) config together. It is still completely valid to later detach and re-attach as needed, including to another session.
2024-04-23test: improve test conventionsdundargoc1
Specifically, functions that are run in the context of the test runner are put in module `test/testutil.lua` while the functions that are run in the context of the test session are put in `test/functional/testnvim.lua`. Closes https://github.com/neovim/neovim/issues/27004.

2024-03-23refactor(tests): all screen tests should use highlightsbfredl1
This is the first installment of a multi-PR series significantly refactoring how highlights are being specified. The end goal is to have a base set of 20 ish most common highlights, and then specific files only need to add more groups to that as needed. As a complicating factor, we also want to migrate to the new default color scheme eventually. But by sharing a base set, that future PR will hopefully be a lot smaller since a lot of tests will be migrated just simply by updating the base set in place. As a first step, fix the anti-pattern than Screen defaults to ignoring highlights. Highlights are integral part of the screen state, not something "extra" which we only test "sometimes". For now, we still allow opt-out via the intentionally ugly screen._default_attr_ids = nil The end goal is to get rid of all of these eventually (which will be easier as part of the color scheme migration)

2023-12-09test: avoid repeated screen lines in expected stateszeertzjq1
This is the command invoked repeatedly to make the changes: :%s/^\(.*\)|\%(\*\(\d\+\)\)\?$\n\1|\%(\*\(\d\+\)\)\?$/\=submatch(1)..'|*'..(max([str2nr(submatch(2)),1])+max([str2nr(submatch(3)),1]))/g
2023-09-11fix(tests): set SHELL=sh #24941Sergey Slipchenko1
Problem: Some tests fail with $SHELL=fish #6172 Related: https://github.com/neovim/neovim/pull/6176 Solution: Replace "echo -n" with "printf", because "echo" in sh may be provided as a shell builtin, which does not accept an "-n" flag to avoid a trailing newline (e.g. on macos). "printf" is more portable (defined by POSIX) and it does not output a trailing newline by itself. Fixes #6172 TODO: Other test failures may be related to "session leader" issue: https://github.com/neovim/neovim/issues/2354 Checked by running `:terminal ./build/bin/tty-test` from Nvim with `shell=/bin/fish` (inherited from `$SHELL`) and it indeed complains about "process does not own the terminal". With `shell=sh` it doesn't complain. And unsetting `$SHELL` seems to make `nvim` to fall back to `shell=sh`. 2023-03-19fix(shell): on Windows :make does not echo #22728Enan Ajmain1
Problem: On Windows, :make does not display the output of the program it runs. The cause is the default 'shellpipe'. On Linux, nvim uses `tee` to redirect the output to both stdout and the error file. In Windows, for both cmd.exe and powershell, the output is only redirected to the error file. Solution: - On Windows, change the 'shellpipe' default to "2>&1| tee". - Nvim includes `tee` in its Windows package. - Document recommended defaults for powershell. Fixes #12910
2023-01-12fix(powershell): wrong length allocation for ":%w !" #20530Enan Ajmain1
Problem: The calculation of `len` in `make_filter_cmd` for powershell falls short by one character for the following ex command: :%w !sort This command satisfies these conditions: - `itmp` is not null - `otmp` is null __NOTE__ that other shells circumvent this bug only because of `len` allocation for six extra characters: a pair of curly braces and four spaces: https://github.com/neovim/neovim/blob/cfdb4cbada8c65aa57e69776bcc0f7b8b298317a/src/nvim/ex_cmds.c#L1551-L1554 If allocation for these six characters are removed, then bash also faces the same bug. Solution: Add allocation for 6 extra bytes. 1 would do, but let's keep powershell in sync with other shells as much as possible.

2022-11-22test: simplify platform detection (#21020)dundargoc1
Extend the capabilities of is_os to detect more platforms such as freebsd and openbsd. Also remove `iswin()` helper function as it can be replaced by `is_os("win")`.
2022-09-30fix: :! pwsh redirection for `command not found`Enan Ajmain1
Problem: If the shell command passed to the filtered bang command isn't found, the error isn't redirected to the temp.out file when shell is set to powershell. Solution: Use anonymous function with Invoke-Command operator (&).
2022-09-30fix: make_filter_cmd for :! powershellEnan Ajmain1
Problem: `Start-Process` requires the command to be split into the shell command and its arguments. Previously it was done by parsing, which didn't handle cases such as - commands with escaped space in their filepath - quoted commands with space in their filepath Solution: Use - `pwsh -Command` instead of `Start-Process` - `Get-Content` instead of `-RedirectStandardInput` - `Out-File` instead of `-RedirectStandardOutput`
2022-07-18fix(powershell): filter ":!" commands with args #19268Enan Ajmain1
Problem: Since 0b9664f5240be4d9e9d6882fcd398970fd3a9532 powershell filtered :[range]! commands with args causes error: "Start-Process: A positional parameter cannot be found that accepts argument ..." Solution: Pass args to Start-Process via `-ArgumentList`. closes #19250
2022-06-26test: use "python3" to avoid skipped test #19106Justin M. Keyes1
Problem: The "calls executable in $PATH" is skipped on some CI jobs because "python" is not found. Solution: Use "python3" instead.
2022-06-25refactor(tests): introduce testprg()Justin M. Keyes1
Also: - Add a describe('shell :!') section to system_spec. - Make the test for #16271 work on systems without powershell.
2022-06-25fix: make_filter_cmd for :! powershell #15913Enan Ajmain1
Problem: Nvim fails to create tempfile "…/nvim6UJx04/7" when 'shell' is set to pwsh (PowerShell Core). This breaks filtered shell commands ":{range}!". With shell set to cmd, it works. Solution: PowerShell doesn't use "<" for stdin redirection. Instead, use "-RedirectStandardInput". Closes #15913

2021-09-17test: reorg #15698Justin M. Keyes1
Problem: Subdirectories like "visual", "insert", "normal" encourage people to separate *related* tests for no good reason. Typically the _mode_ is not the relevant topic of a test (and when it is, _then_ create an appropriate describe() or it()). Solution: - Delete the various `test/functional/<mode>/` subdirectories, move their tests to more meaningful topics. - Rename `…/normal/` to `…/editor/`. - Move or merge `…/visual/*` and `…/insert/*` tests into here where appropriate. - Rename `…/eval/` to `…/vimscript/`. - Move `…/viml/*` into here also. * test(reorg): insert/* => editor/mode_insert_spec.lua * test(reorg): cmdline/* => editor/mode_cmdline_spec.lua * test(reorg): eval core tests => eval_spec.lua
